Description:

POLICE GAZETTE POSTER OF JAMES CORBETT VS. ROBERT FITZSIMMONS
1894
Published by Richard K. Fox Police Gazette.

  • Provenance: According to Wikipedia, "The Police Gazette was the first organized boxing sanctioning body in the US, declaring its intention in 1881 and issuing championships beginning in 1882. Integral to the Police Gazette Rules was the requirement that championships be contested bare knuckle. Though all professional championship boxing was technically illegal, the Gazette continued as the bare-knuckle sanctioning organization until 1894 when it was clear gloved boxing would be the only acceptable mainstream version of the sport.
  • Dimensions: Color lithograph, 15" x 19.25". Framed 26.25" x 30.5".
  • Condition: .75" semi-circular loss, upper left margin. Several edge tears. Unexamined out of frame.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
